We are honoured to welcome Japanese ceramic artist Jun Matsumura for a rare two-day masterclass at the Kawartha Potters Guild—marking his first visit to Canada. This is a unique opportunity to learn directly from an internationally exhibiting artist whose work bridges traditional Japanese ceramic practice with a refined and experimental approach to form.

This intensive masterclass offers participants rare, first-hand insight into Matsumura’s technical process and approach to making. Through a combination of demonstration and hands-on practice, you will explore Japanese wheel-throwing techniques alongside his distinctive carving methods.

As part of this experience, Matsumura will be bringing specialized carving tools from Japan. Each participant will receive two Japanese tungsten carbide knives to use during the workshop—and to take home, supporting continued exploration beyond the session.

Over two days, participants will dive deep into Jun Matsumura’s approach to ceramics. Day one begins with an artist introduction, followed by demonstrations of Japanese wheel-throwing techniques and hands-on practice, preparing forms for carving. On day two, Matsumura will demonstrate his signature carving methods using specialized tools, with time for participants to carve, refine, and receive group feedback before selecting pieces for firing.

This masterclass is best suited for intermediate participants with prior wheel-throwing experience. Attendees should be comfortable centring and opening about 1.5 lb of clay, and interested in expanding both their technical skills and conceptual approach to ceramics.
