We extend our gratitude to Salina Szechtman for supporting these awards in memory of Ann. In addition, the Susan Low-Beer Student Scholarship supports a student in a full-time clay or glass program who is dedicated to their artistic development.

Led by acclaimed curator Rachel Gotlieb, this intimate year-long mentorship is designed to give eight artists the time, conversation and critical perspective to push their practices in new directions.

Through in-person sessions in Toronto, participants will engage in honest critique, sustained discussion and thoughtful exploration, culminating in a professionally documented group exhibition.

Pictured: Dale Chihuly’s The Sun, from “From the Functional to the Fabulous,” curated by Rachel Gotlieb at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. Once installed on the museum’s front steps each summer, the sculpture now anchors a show that reframes the works around it as objects of wonder in their own right — the same spirit of transformation at the heart of this mentorship.

We’re thrilled to celebrate Genie Kim @geniekim_artist , recipient of the FUSION Ontario Clay and Glass Design Award as part of Craft Ontario’s 2026 Craft Awards! This annual honour recognizes excellence and dedication in the field of craft and design.

Congratulations as well to FUSION members Hannah Faas @hannah.faas , Katie Lemieux @artist.katielemieux , Yanick Robichaud @yanickrglass , Jamila Monahan @jamilamonahan , and Deborah Hatanaka @tor, who are also being recognized among this year’s Craft Award recipients!

We’ve been asked to help identify the artists behind this intriguing vessel, acquired in Bowmanville some time ago — and we’re hoping our FUSION community might have some clues!

The piece mimics a dugout canoe using a beautiful faux bois (wood-grain) aesthetic, with a glossy black interior. It’s dated 2016 and bears a distinctive red “BV” hand-stamped or painted on the base. There also appear to be two or three overlapping cursive signatures in black, possibly including a “J” and a “K.”

Does the form look familiar? What about the red “BV” stamp or those signatures?

What happens when an artist’s practice enters its next chapter?

For NEXT PRACTICE, FUSION is bringing together eight established clay and glass artists with curator Rachel Gotlieb for a year of sustained conversation, critique and exploration.

Rachel’s career has placed her at the centre of Canadian ceramics, design and contemporary art. She has served as Chief Curator of the Gardiner Museum, was the inaugural Ruth Rippon Curator of Ceramics at the Crocker Art Museum, and founded the Design Exchange’s curatorial program.
Her curatorial practice is matched by decades of research, writing and publishing on ceramics, design and material culture. Her books and scholarly publications have explored everything from functional ceramics and Victorian imagery to the enduring fascination with historic vessels and their meanings.

That depth of knowledge brings a distinctive perspective to NEXT PRACTICE; one grounded in looking closely, asking questions and understanding how an artist’s work fits within a larger cultural and historical conversation.

Over the course of a year, participants will have that critical perspective turned toward their own practices: an opportunity to question where the work is now, where it could go, and what might be possible next.
