Artist's Statement

My work revolves around the themes of Canadian myths, legends, and history. I use satire and humour to achieve communication and dialogue with the viewer!

It is difficult to sum up 45 years as a professional clay artist! I grew up in Niagara Falls, Ontario and graduated from Sheridan College’s School Of Crafts and Design with a 3 yr. Diploma in Ceramics and Glass in 1970 (First Graduation Class). I taught at George Brown College (Head of Ceramic Department) in Toronto for 5 years then moved to North Bay to teach at Canadore College for the next 34 years. I was a founder and Director of Canadore College’s Artsperience: Summer School of the Arts for 25 years. I have also conducted over 50 workshops across Canada. I have exhibited my work in approx. 285 exhibitions nationally and internationally.

I have received 56 awards/honours including being inducted into the Niagara Falls Arts & Culture Wall of Fame in 2013, a Lifetime Achievement Award from CBACH (Coordinating Body Arts Culture Heritage) in 2014, being a finalist in the Premier’s Award for Excellence in the Arts in both 2010 & 2014, the John and Barbara Mather Medal Award for Lifetime Achievement for Craft in 2003 (Craft Ontario), Artist in Residence Emeritus title from Canadore College 2009, Canada’s 125th Anniversary Commemorative Medal 1992, etc.

My works are included in 27 texts including two written by Jonathon Bancroft Snell called “ART IN CANADA and “KEITH CAMPBELL. My works are in numerous collections including the Royal Ontario Museum, Archives of Ontario, The Canadian Museum of History, The Nickle Arts Museum, The Varazadin City Museum, Croatia, Winnipeg Art Gallery, Burlington Art Centre, FUSION: The Ontario Clay and Glass Association, Craft Ontario, the Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery, etc. Founding member of FUSION: The Ontario Clay and Glass Association (which I named), Ceramic Masters Canada, White Water Gallery, WKP Kennedy Gallery and the North Bay and Area Potters Guild (founder and first president).
