Artist's Statement
My interest in ancient cultures, rituals, and the world around me is reflected in my work. I use clay slips, stencils, line drawings & sgraffito to depict my interpretation of these eclectic influences. The use of stylized images in neutral tones on simple shapes is an attempt to retain a whimsical or humourous portrayal while establishing an emotional link with the viewer. I strive to produce unique handmade mainly functional pottery that can be used & enjoyed.

To produce my porcelain/white work the piece is thrown, trimmed and bisqued. An ordinary pencil is used to draw guide lines and the proposed design on the pot. The final design is drawn with a black ceramic pencil. Clear glaze is applied over the pot, including the black pencil line drawing and fired to cone six. The ordinary pencil lines burn out in the firing leaving the black ceramic pencil decoration.

For the stoneware (black or brown)work the pieces are thrown and trimmed. Stencils are cut from newspapers, wetted and smoothed onto the pot. White and/or brown slip are applied with special attention made to covering the stencils thoroughly. A pencil is used to draw any sgraffito effect that is desired. This can be lines, circles, triangles etc. The stencil is removed to reveal the clay below. This technique gives a carved feel to the pot. After bisquing and removal of any large or rough bumps, the piece is glazed with a clear glaze and fired to cone six.
