"Atmospheric firing methods have been profoundly important to the aesthetic direction of my clay work over the past 45 years."- Dan Hill

Are you interested in exploring the potentials of the atmospheric firing process? This workshop series is for anyone interested in learning more about atmospheric firing and surface treatments that activate the form. Atmospheric changes and the movement of heat and flame within the kiln can have a profound effect on the ceramic form. Whether you fire in reduction, with gas or wood, Dan Hill’s knowledge of form development, surface design and glazing will certainly bring a fresh approach to your work. For more information and photos of Dan’s work, visit www.hillpottery.com

This workshop series will take place over three weekends:

April 2-3, June 4-5 and June 12, 2022, 10-4 p.m. daily

Saturday, April 2 - Sunday, April 3  at the W.B. Lewis Public Library in Deep River, Ontario

Dan will demonstrate his process, throwing, altering, slab work and pre- firing decoration techniques, with a focus on how and why these choices are made in preparation for an atmospheric firing. Dan will bring an array of pots as examples of the different processes.

Registration is limited to 20 participants. No prior experience is necessary; suitable for all levels. The first 12 spots will be reserved for those registering for 5-day extended workshop.

Saturday, June 4 - Sunday, June 5 in Wilno, Ontario at Dan Hill's studio

This two-day session will involve glazing, loading and atmospheric firing in Dan Hill's soda kiln. This weekend is designed for those with a good understanding of the ceramic process, including forming, glazing and firing. Participants will be bringing 8 to 10 of their own bisqued pieces, ready for firing.

Registration is limited to 12 participants.

Sunday, June 12 at Dan Hill's studio

This day will be spent unloading the kiln, examining results, and considering all the variations from the group firing. There will be a discussion of where each participant might want to go from here to develop work further.

FUSION will conduct these meetings with strict compliance to all Ontario Health and Safety guidelines. Proof of vaccination is required to participate. If the event needs to be cancelled, you will receive a full refund.
