WORKSHOP A

Making Large Pots on the Wheel – HANDS-ON WORKSHOP with Thom Lambert

This workshop will focus on tips and techniques for expanding the size of pots that you can create on the wheel with your current ability. Specific topics will include creating large platters and footed pots that need no trimming, combining 2-4 thrown sections to create large pots, and techniques of handling large amounts of clay.

Participants must bring 1 box of throwing clayLunch will be provided.


Thom Lambert runs Singing Dog Studio in Haliburton, Ontario. He has been teaching a wide variety of ceramic techniques for over 10 years. Thom has developed a loyal following due to his clear, engaging teaching style and logical approach to finding a voice in clay.

WORKSHOP B-1

Japanese - Style Painting – HANDS-ON WORKSHOP with Lucie Rossignol

Lucie Rossignol will conduct a hands-on and demonstration workshop using a unique style of painting on pottery from the famous pottery town of AritaJapan. Attendees will learn techniques to improve their brush strokes and designs while experimenting on 2 of their own bisque pieces.

Participants must bring 2 of their own bisque pieces.


Lucie Rossignol, a Fine Arts graduate from the University of Ottawa (1975), began working with porcelain in 1978 with the famous potter Kinya Ishikawa. In 1994 she graduated from the Arita College of ceramics, specializing in underglaze painting. She is well known for the beauty and precision of her work and has won many prizes over the last 33 years of mastering her brush work.

AN INTRODUCTION TO GLASS BEAD MAKING: HANDS-ON WORKSHOP with Alex Hamilton
 
Using torches, participants will make basic glass beads and learn decoration methods. Alex will demonstrate a variety of basic flame-working and simple surface decoration techniques. The beads will be annealed overnight and may be picked up at the studio the next day. Free parking is available on site. Lunch will be provided. Please reserve your space early as the class is limited to 6 students.

Alex Hamilton is a glass blower and torch worker from Manotick, ON. He graduated from Sheridan College in 1986 and has been teaching and developing his skills ever since. He has taught at Sheridan College, Oakville, Espace Verre, Montreal and is currently teaching at Corning Glass in New York.

WORKSHOP D
 
FIBRE KILN BUILDING: DEMONSTRATION WORKSHOP with Colette Beardall and Anne Chambers

Colette Beardall and Anne Chambers will lead participants through the process of building a fibre Raku kiln which will then be fired on Friday during the raku workshop. A fibre kiln is cost effective, inexpensive to fire, light weight, portable and easy to use. Workshop discussion will cover where to source supplies. In event of rain, check FUSION website for workshop location.

Colette Beardall, the current president of the Ottawa Guild of Potters, was represented by several galleries in northern Alberta before moving to Ottawa in 2001. She is a member of the Eastern Regional Craft Advisory Committee of the Ontario Crafts Council and has worked as one of the coordinators of Great Bowls of Fire, a fundraiser benefitting the Food Bank for the past 3 years. Colette works from and teaches private and group lessons at her home studio in Metcalfe, ON., alongside her horses, dogs and cats. Sculpture is her passion. Her work is featured in Steve Branfman’s new book “Mastering Raku.”

Anne Chambers is an award-winning potter who has been working in clay for 25 years. She has taught glaze and altered pot workshops across Ontario and has participated in many juried shows and exhibitions including Fireworks 2005 and 2008. Her awards include Best Non-Functional 2006, Best Functional 2005, 2007 & 2008, and Best in Show 2008 from The Ottawa Guild of Potters. Her work has been published in Clay Times as well as FUSION Magazine. Anne has served the clay community as President of both FUSION and the Ottawa Guild of Potters. After many years of firing in oxidation, Anne has moved her studio to the country where she now fires her work in her gas reduction or soda kiln.

RAKU: GLAZING AND FIRING – HANDS-ON WORKSHOP with Colette Beardall and Anne Chambers

The dynamic duo of Colette Beardall and Anne Chambers will ensure you have a fun -filled day while enjoying the excitement of a raku firing. Colette, known for her raku Inukshuk sculptures, and Anne, for her fumed ferric chloride bottle forms, will guide you through various raku techniques from copper mattes to fumed horse hair. Participants will need to bring 2-3 bisque pots no bigger than 8" x 8" x 8", paint brushes, work gloves, and closed toe shoes. Glazes supplied. Bring your own bag lunch.

WORKSHOP F
 
“MORE THAN ONE WAY TO SKIN A POT”: HANDS-ON DECORATING WORKSHOP with Carolynne Pynn-Trudeau

Carolynne Pynn-Trudeau will conduct a hands-on Surface Decoration workshop using slip, shellac, underglaze and overglaze materials. Participants will need to bring a series of clay tiles: 4 leather hard, 1 bone dry, 3 bisque fired, 2 glazed. Tiles should be made 3 x 5 inches, ¼ to ½ inch thick with a hole cut for hanging. Bring a bag lunch or use campus cafeteria.

A graduate in Fine Arts at McMaster University, Carolynne worked as an apprentice with Helen Brink, 1971-1973. She has been a studio potter, instructor, tile designer for over 35 years. She has created architectural installations in Hamilton, Port Colborne, Welland and Ottawa. Her work has received exhibition design awards and is in international collections. Twice a board member for FUSION, Carolynne was awarded the Ontario Crafts Council John Mather Award for her volunteer service.

“MAKING MARKS”: HANDS-ON THROWING WORKSHOP with Thom Lambert

This hands-on wheel throwing workshop explores expressive techniques that accentuate the plasticity and spontaneity of clay to bring more life to your pots. Fluting, stretching, faceting, and thick-slip decoration will be demonstrated. Participants will focus on developing and applying an individual vocabulary of expression. Bring throwing tools, apron, bucket, torch or hair dryer if possible, plus pictures of pots that inspire you. Participants must bring 1 bag of any throwing clay. Lunch included.

“THE ART OF THE FAMILIAR” DEMONSTRATION WORKSHOP with Jim Thomson

Jim Thomson, celebrated Ottawa area ceramic artist, will lead a one day workshop on hand-building, emphasizing functional and sculptural concerns. Through an illustrated talk, Jim will discuss his philosophy and approach to pottery. Pizza lunch is included.

Jim Thomson, RCA, has been creating in clay since 1973 and has exhibited his work across Canada, the UK, China, Japan, Korea, The Netherlands, Italy, as well as in Columbus, Chicago, Philadelphia, New York, Washington, D.C, in the USA. Jim has lectured at The Nova Scotia School of Art and Design, Ontario College of Art, Concordia University, Sheridan College of Art & Design, Queen's University, The Gardiner Museum of Ceramic Art, The National Gallery of Canada, and The Burlington Arts Centre. Jim’s publicly commissioned work titled On Top of the World can be seen at the former Regional Headquarters in Ottawa, now the new Ottawa City Hall. At the old Ottawa City Hall on Sussex Drive his commissioned work of 12 Benches can also be viewed. Currently, Jim welcomes new students at his Lolaland Clay Studio located in the Gatineau Hills where he conducts workshops and teaches privately. www.jimthomson.ca

WORKSHOP I
 
HANDBUILDING GARDEN POTS: HANDS-ON Workshop with Chandler Swain

Using a variety of techniques, participants will hand build a red earthenware planter for once – firing. All levels of experience are welcome. Participants are asked to bring a rolling pin, knife, textures to print, ware board approximately 15" x 9" to carry pot home to be ONCE-FIRED. Participants must bring 1/2 bag red earthenware clay (suggestion: Red Maj from Tuckers). Lunch included.

Chandler Swain is a studio potter and teacher with over 30 years experience who lives and works in Blakeney, just west of Ottawa, ON. Images of her work have been published in Making Marks: Discovering the Ceramic Surface by Robin Hopper, and 500 Teapots and Handbuilt Tableware by Lark Press. Her work can be seen in Ontario at Distill Gallery, Toronto, Jonathon Bancroft Snell Gallery, London, Lafrenière and Pai Gallery, Ottawa and Art Etc. in Burlington Art Centre, Burlington. DIRECTIONS: TO Chandler's studio: Take the #417 west out of Ottawa ( or if you are coming to Ottawa from the west/north or south /west and will do this workshop BEFORE you hit the big O, call me for your particular directions: 613 256 6522 ) My exit west of Ottawa is #155 to Almonte: about 20 minutes out of Ottawa due west. Just keep on the highway .... take exit #155 go left to Almonte, ( 10 minutes approx ). When you get to Almonte you will go around a roundabout: go straight ahead, past 3 sets of traffic lights then turn right at the next light ( which is Martin St.) Continue for approx 5 kms til you come to the village of Blakeney turn left at the stop sign and go along til you come to #178 Blakeney Rd.  ( about 1/4 KM from stop sign ): you will see a sage green building by the road. In all it takes about 40 minutes from the centre of Ottawa.

TOUR OF ANNE CRESKEY’S WOODFIRING STUDIO and POT LUCK LUNCH

Anne will explain how she built her bourry-box wood kiln. Her discussion will include the history of wood- firing, the joys and pains of the combustion process, the choices of wood-fire clays, glazing, stacking and sources of wood, flame colour, the effect of fly ash, and the variable effect of the fire on clay. Workshop includes lunch of homemade soup, fresh bread and anything you'd like to bring to add to a potluck in the country.

Anne Creskey has been making pottery for the past twenty years. She teaches at the Nepean Visual Arts Centre and she has also given summer wood-fire workshops. Her work is shown at the annual 260 Fingers show in Ottawa and at the Artists in their Environment Studio Tour.

MAKING YOUR OWN TOOLS: HANDS-ON Workshop with Victoria Jenkins

Enjoy a day in the country workshop of Victoria Jenkins. In this hands-on workshop Victoria will demonstrate the use of tools for texturing and trimming, as well as a hand-held extruder and hygrometer, bisque moulds for a variety of shapes, cone 6 firing pins, handle cutters, slip trailers, paint brushes, irregular shaped extruder dies and hole cutters, and more. You will have time to build some of the items demonstrated. Materials will be provided. Exploration of new ideas and techniques often requires inventing and developing tools for special purposes. Participants are invited to bring tools that they have developed to share ideas. Lunch is included.

Victoria Jenkins earned a BFA at the University of Regina before setting up her own studio in 1983. She combines hand building and throwing to make housewares, planters and sinks. Her whimsical work reflects a sense of humour and her figurative sculptures are known for their energy and “story telling” qualities. www.victoriajenkins.com

TILE DESIGN: HANDS-ON WORKSHOP with Hanne Lawrence

In her home studio Hanne Lawrence will demonstrate how to make relief-carved mosaic tiles for specific places. Hanne will explain the complete installation process using examples of tiles installed in bathrooms, the kitchen, in a fireplace surround, on table tops and more. At this workshop members will be inspired to begin a tile project of their own. Participants will have the opportunity to design and carve their own relief tile (6x6 inch tile of cone 6 clay supplied by Hanne), which can be taken home for firing. Tools are provided, but participants are invited to bring their favourite carving tools to the workshop.

Hanne holds a diploma of Fine Crafts from Algonquin College and has been working with clay for over 30 years. She has participated in numerous juried shows including FUSION’S Pottery and Glass Show, The Ottawa Christmas Craft Sale, and 260 Fingers. Presently her work can be seen at Bittersweet Gallery in Burnstown and Perivale Gallery on Manitoulin Island. Her boxes, vases and platters show animal and plant motifs are influenced by her world travels. Her tile work, while reflecting these themes, has been an entirely non-commercial enterprise.

SLIP CASTING: DEMONSTRATION WORKSHOP with Margaret-Ann Capper

Margaret-Ann Capper will demonstrate the slip casting technique in this workshop. She will combine the colour in the clay with slip trailing, marbling and laminating to create unusual forms, both functional and non-functional. Bring a bag lunch or use campus cafeteria.

Having worked in clay for 30 years, Margaret-Ann Capper has recently moved to the National Capitol Region from Sackville, NB. Margaret Ann completed a BFA at NSCAD in Halifax prior to an apprenticeship with Crimmons Studio. She taught at the New Brunswick College of Craft & Design in Fredericton, NB.
